Week 2- Prayer
Session 2 – INTERCEDING AS PRIESTS
Priestly prayer involves supplication to God to bring a change in another person or circumstance. People are the focus as nothing in this earth happens without the agency of people. We are in a spiritual battle centred on our minds.
2 Cor 10:4-5 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5. casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. (our weapons include the Word, praise, faith, gifts of the Spirit etc)
New Covenant Prayer
We should look to the New Testament for examples of how to intercede. Remember the New Testament /Covenant started after the cross. The Lord’s prayer is not a new covenant prayer. It’s a framework which is good, but we need to add Grace to it to make it an effective prayer for us.
James 5:16 – The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
Jer 1:12 – Then the Lord said to me “you have seen well for I am ready to perform my Word
Ps 103:20 – Bless the Lord, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word, heeding the voice of His Word
Praying the Word is effective prayer.
Dutch Sheets – “Praying and declaring the Word of God is the highest and most effective level of prayer”.
In Paul’s epistles time and time again he encouraged us to pray for one another. They can be prayed word for word. Note its FOR people, not against people. Precatory prayer like the way David prayed has no place in prayer today.
Rom 15:30,31; 1Cor 1:4-8; Eph 1:16-23; Eph 3:16-21; Eph 6:18; 1 Tim 2:1; Col 1:9-12;
Col 4:3-4; Col 4:12; 1 Thess 3:12-13; 2 Thess 1:11-12; 2 Thess 3:1-2; Phil 1:6

Praying for the Lost
Matt 9:37-38 – The harvest truly is plentiful, but the labourers are few. 38. Therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest.
2 Cor 4:3-6 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4. whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, least the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them…. 6. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Pray that the darkness is broken; that the light of the gospel breaks through.
John 20:23 – If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven, if you retain the sins of any they are retained.
Matt 16:19 – And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
What an amazing privilege and power. Only God forgives sin, but in intercession we can neutralize the effect of sin on the person we are praying for, loose the benefit of forgiveness and binding the effect of sin on that person.
Over and Over
Because of the human will which is inviolate, we pray over and over for other people. God is answering your prayer every time as soon as we pray, but the person you’re praying for can void your pray by resisting the Holy Spirit and obeying the Devil.
Praying in the Spirit
Rom 8:26 – Likewise the Spirit also helps (takes hold together with us against) in our weaknesses (inability). For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for the us with groanings which cannot be uttered (in articulate speech). 27. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
The Holy Spirit helps us – together with us, not apart from us. When we are weak and clueless, He is strong and all knowing.
Yield to Him, Dance with Him and allow Him to pray through us – sometimes in deep groanings.
God will lead you by an ‘upset’ in your spirit. You lose your peace and you’re agitated. This may be for you or another. Pray in the spirit until you get a release. The old timers call this a ‘burden’.
Pray through until it lifts and then praise Him for the answer obtained by faith.
