Week 4 – Authority

NOTES:

It starts from the ‘INTRINSIC’ values we have receive when we allow Jesus Christ to rule Supreme in our hearts

1. Jesus’ high priestly prayer

JOHN 17:1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward

 heaven and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that

 your Son may glorify you.

2. For you granted him authority over all people that

he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.

3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only

true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

2.Authority starts in your heart:

Authority is built on the intrinsic values, foundation of the complete work of the cross as we respond to our Father in total trust and Faith

Our last teachings, Understanding the covenants, Justification, Righteousness, are vital to our understanding of our authority.

The Lord’s calling is your confidence and authority to heal the sick, cast out demons and raise the dead! (Matt 10:1)

What Adam lost in the garden, Jesus Christ restored on the cross.

3.New Testament: Gk. exousía points to a valid inner authority. Jesus has the authority to teach, to forgive sins and cure sickness and to judge.

God is the ultimate source of all power, it was through the full authority of Christ “in heaven and on earth” that his disciples were able to teach, heal the sick, and cast out evil spirits. Paul also cited his apostolic authority and warned others not to abuse their power.

Most importantly, it was the power of God acting through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ that made possible the ultimate authority over all powers, human and superhuman (e.g., 1 Cor. 15:24; Eph. 1:21; Rev. 13:2).

4.Eph 1:18-23 ………. he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that can be invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

5.The Promise: Making disciples of all nations may seem overwhelming.

However, as we go to make disciples, we can go with confidence and Authority

We are assured of our ultimate success because Christ now has all authority and has promised to be with us in all the days to the end of the age.

Christ Himself is the guarantee of success, as we abide in Him, depending on His authority and presence (Jn 15:4-17).

Jesus gives His Church both her main assignment until He returns and the promise upon which her success is guaranteed!

  1. Matthew 28:18-20Then Jesus came to them and said,

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

PRACTICAL QUESTIONS;

  1. Share an area of your life where you have taken authority
  2. Discuss the importance of the word to undergird and carry authority
  3. Do you know the limits of your authority?, think of the Policeman story
