About Highway
We are so glad you’re here. At Highway Christian Community, we believe the church is more than just a place you attend — it is a family you belong to.
This page is an invitation to look in — to discover who we are, what we value, and how we live out our mission together. We are committed to walking the journey of faith side by side: centred on Jesus, shaped by love, and supporting one another through every season of life. Whether you are just starting to ask questions about faith or are looking for a place to call home, our prayer is that this journey brings you clarity, connection, and a deep sense of belonging. Welcome home.
Jesus at the centre
While this page speaks about structure, values, and community, our focus has always been — and will always be — Jesus Christ. Everything we do flows from Him: our faith, our relationships, our leadership, our mission.
Our foundation
We are a church devoted to the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the foundation of who we are, the focus of our faith, and the centre of our life together as a church family.
Led by the Spirit. We are a Spirit-led church that values the Holy Spirit’s presence and leading in our gatherings and daily lives. We make space to listen, respond, and be shaped by what God is doing among us.
A living movement. As a family, we expect to grow and change as the Lord leads us. We believe that obedience requires movement, humility, and trust. Being a church willing to grow and change is the difference between becoming a monument to the past and remaining a living movement led by God. We choose to journey together — rooted in Christ, led by the Spirit, and open to all that God has for us.

Our story: a journey of grace
Every family has a story, and ours is a testimony of God’s kindness and growth over more than 30 years. What you see today is the result of many seasons of prayer, movement, and a constant desire to follow where the Holy Spirit leads.
- 1988A garage in Westville
Rooted in Hatfield’s video churches, about 50 people begin gathering under Herman and Joy Basson — the baton passing from Ps Ed Roebert.
- 1992Resilience
An unexpected loss shakes the young family — and the spirit of resilience prevails as Greg and Michelle take the helm.
- The Haswell yearsOut of the box and on the air
Greg Haswell and the family grow — gathering beyond four walls and taking to the airwaves with Highway Radio.
- 1996Into Pinetown
Steve and Janet Wheeler join Greg Haswell in Pinetown, just outside Durban, and settle into the family.
- OnwardThirty years of the Wheelers
Greg is called to plant a church in Atlanta, and Steve and Janet take the lead. For thirty years they have carried this family — and they still do.
Our vision & purpose
Our vision isn’t just a statement on a wall — it is the heartbeat of our family. We are here to live out three simple yet profound callings:
To Follow Jesus
He goes first; we follow. Obedience requires movement, humility, and trust.
To Love One Another
Love one another as Jesus has loved us — in our relationships, our community, and every season of life.
To Make Disciples
Walk with people as they follow Jesus — side by side, in the Word and in everyday life.
And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
Seeking the Kingdom above all else
Our purpose is to seek God above all else, placing His Kingdom and His ways at the centre of everything we do. We believe that as we live under Christ our King, we are shaped by His rule. This transformation forms us into Kingdom Ambassadors — people who love one another as Jesus has loved us and reflect His grace in every relationship. From this place of unity and obedience, we are sent into His mission. We trust God for a fruitful harvest, confident that as we prioritise His Kingdom, He faithfully provides all we need.
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Speaking the Kingdom’s language
Words like Evangelion, Ecclesia and Grace Covenant come up often in our preaching — not to sound “religious”, but to recapture the historic and revolutionary meaning of what Jesus actually said. We keep a plain-words glossary so nobody needs the glossary page they never got:

Our biblical model
We look to the early church as our inspiration for how we live as a family every day, not just on Sundays.
Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
