Baby Dedication

Baby dedication is a wonderful occasion in which parents make a public declaration of faith to raise their child under God’s grace and wisdom. Dedicating your baby or child to God shows that you know your child is a gift from God, and that you are committing yourself to being a Christlike example to your child.

We would be honoured to share this with you. Our dedications take place as part of our Sunday gathering at 9:30am, so there is nothing to book and nothing to arrange — simply come, and speak to one of our leaders before or after the service.

What happens at a dedication

  1. We gather

You arrive for our Sunday service as normal. Dedications are held within the gathering, not as a separate event.

  2. You speak

Parents share their prayer and their commitment before the family. There is no script to memorise and no test to pass.

  3. We pray

We pray for your child and for you as parents, asking for grace and wisdom to raise them well.

  4. We send you out

You leave with your child and the promise that you are not doing this alone — our family stays with you as you go.

The verses we read

These passages have shaped what we believe about dedication for many years, and they are the ones we read aloud.

Proverbs 22:6 · ESV

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Psalm 8:2 · ESV

Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.

Isaiah 44:24 · ESV

Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself…”

Jeremiah 1:5 · ESV

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

An honest word about what this is

  • Dedication is not an officially instituted ordinance of the church.
  • We see no conflict with Scripture in holding one, provided parents do not view it as assuring the salvation of the child.
  • Salvation is God’s gift, received by faith. Dedication is a family’s response of faith.
  • You are not dedicating your child to us — you are dedicating them to God, in front of His people.

If you would like to dedicate your child, or you simply want to ask a question first, please get in touch. We would rather hear from you early than have you wonder whether you can come.
