Is There More to Your Walk with God?

Howzit! When you first decide to follow Jesus, it’s an exciting journey. But sometimes you might wonder, “Is there more?” You read stories in the Bible about God moving in powerful ways, and you want to experience that same closeness and power in your own life. The good news is, there is more! God has given special gifts, called spiritual gifts, to every single one of his children, including you. These aren’t for a select few; they are for building you up and helping you step into the amazing destiny He has planned for you.

Let’s explore two of these incredible gifts: prophecy and speaking in tongues.

Love: The Foundation for Everything

Before we even get into the gifts, we need to start where the Bible starts: with love. The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians to chase after love with everything we’ve got. Think of love as the soil, and the spiritual gifts are the plants that grow in it. Without good soil, the plants won’t be healthy. In the same way, without love, even the most amazing spiritual gifts are meaningless. Love is the very nature of God, and He’s placed that love inside you.

Prophecy: Building Others Up

The word “prophecy” can sound a bit intimidating, right? We might picture old men with long beards from the Bible. But at its heart, prophecy is simply speaking words that build up, encourage, and comfort others. Its main purpose is always to point people to Jesus.

Have you ever had a friend say something that was exactly what you needed to hear at that moment? That’s the heart of prophecy! It’s a gift that helps free people from fear and worry by showing them God’s perspective. It’s God using you to bring hope to someone else.

Speaking in Tongues: Your Personal Connection

This is another gift that can seem strange at first, but it’s incredibly powerful and personal. Here’s what makes it so special:

  • It Builds You Up: Praying in tongues is like charging your spiritual battery. It’s a gift that strengthens you personally.

  • It’s a Direct Line to God: When you pray in tongues, your spirit is praying directly to God. You’re speaking mysteries to Him, praying His perfect will even when your mind doesn’t know the right words to say.

  • It’s a Gateway: For many people, learning to pray in tongues helps them become more sensitive to hearing God’s voice in other ways, which can lead to gifts like prophecy.

It’s important to know there’s a difference between praying in tongues privately and in a church service. When you’re alone, you can pray as much as you want for your own encouragement. In a public church meeting, the Bible says there should be someone who can interpret the tongue, so that the message can be understood and build up everyone who is there.

Making It Real: Your Next Steps

This all sounds great, but how do we make it part of our lives?

  1. Just Ask: God is a good Father who loves to give good gifts. You don’t have to earn them. Find a quiet place at home and simply ask Him. Tell Him you are open and you want to experience all He has for you. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t happen right away. Keep asking!

  2. Walk in Freedom: We all struggle with things. But remember, you don’t have to fight sin in your own strength. Jesus has already won that battle! Your job is to believe it and walk in the freedom He has already given you.

  3. Find a Mentor: Connect with someone at your church who you see is walking in love and wisdom. Maybe someone from your life group or an elder. Ask them to pray with you and share their journey. Having someone to guide you is invaluable.

Conclusion

Unlocking these heavenly gifts is all about deepening your relationship with God. It’s about being open, willing, and stepping into the power and purpose He has for you. Don’t be afraid of what you don’t understand. Instead, be excited about discovering more of who God is. Spend some time this week asking God to fill you with His love and to open your heart to His gifts. Your adventure with Him is just beginning! ❤️
