Life in general can be loud, right? Whether it’s the sound of taxis in the morning, the generator kicking in during load-shedding, or just the chatter in your own head, there’s a lot of noise. In the middle of it all, you might be asking, “God, are you there? Can you even hear me?”

Maybe you’re facing a big decision, like a new job, a relationship, or just trying to figure out your next step. It can feel like trying to land a plane in thick mist. You know the runway is there, but you can’t see it. The good news is, just like a pilot has runway lights to guide them, God has given us ways to hear His voice and find our way.

It’s not always a big, booming voice from the clouds. More often, it’s a gentle whisper, a gut feeling, or something that just ‘clicks’ into place. Based on some powerful teachings, let’s explore a few of these “runway lights” that can help you navigate your journey with faith.

Tuning into God’s Frequency

Hearing God is a bit like tuning a radio. At first, you may encounter a lot of static, but with a bit of patience, you find the right frequency. Here are a few ways God communicates with us.

1. The Inner Compass (Your Thoughts & God’s Peace)

Have you ever had a thought pop into your head that felt… different? Wiser and calmer than your usual frantic thoughts? God often speaks to us in a way that sounds like our own inner voice. He uses the “spiritual vocabulary” we build up when we read the Bible and pray. Alongside this, He gives us a deep sense of peace. The Bible calls it a peace that “acts as an umpire” in our hearts, letting us know when we’re on the right track versus when we’re acting out of stress or pressure.

2. Unexpected Signposts (Overheard Words & Media)

God can use the everyday world to get a message to you. It might be something you overhear in a queue at Shoprite, a line in a movie, or even a post you scroll past on social media. The key is to keep your heart open and expectant. When you’re looking for God’s guidance, you start seeing His “winks” everywhere.

3. The Power of Community (Church & Wise Friends)

We were never meant to do this faith thing alone! God speaks powerfully through the teaching of His Word at church and through the wisdom of fellow believers. If you’re wrestling with something, chatting and praying with a trusted friend or a leader in your church can bring amazing clarity. They might see something you’ve missed.

4. Open and Closed Doors

Sometimes, God’s guidance is incredibly practical. He opens doors of opportunity that just make sense. A new job offer comes at the perfect time, or you meet the right person to help you. But remember, a closed door can be just as much of a blessing! A “no” isn’t always a rejection; sometimes it’s God’s protection, redirecting you to something even better. An open door doesn’t mean it will be easy, but it does mean God is with you.

Personal Application: Making it Real

So, how can we start practising this?

  • Take 10 Minutes: This week, find a quiet spot for just 10 minutes. Read a Psalm and ask God to speak to you. Don’t force it. Just sit quietly and see what thoughts or feelings come to mind.

  • Share Your Struggle: Think of one decision you’re facing. Be brave and share it with a trusted Christian friend. Ask them to pray with you and for you.

  • Keep a Journal: For one week, write down any interesting things you hear, see, or think that might be God’s way of speaking. You might be surprised when you look back at the end of the week!

Conclusion: It’s a Journey

Learning to hear God’s voice is a lifelong journey, not a once-off event. It requires patience, faith, and a willingness to listen. Jesus promised, “My sheep will hear my voice”, and that promise is for you. He is speaking. We just need to learn how to tune in.
