Have you ever sat in a church service and heard the word “prophecy”? For many of us, especially those new to faith, that word can sound heavy and maybe a little intimidating. It might bring to mind fiery Old Testament figures or complicated ideas that feels disconnected from our daily lives.

But what if we could rethink what it means to hear from God? What if it’s not about predicting the future, but about receiving a word of encouragement right when you need it? The good news is that in the New Covenant, hearing from God is something accessible to everyone. Yes, that means you, too! It’s a beautiful gift meant to build us up, cheer us on, and comfort us in our journey.

Let’s break down what this means for us today, in a way that’s simple, practical, and deeply encouraging.

Key Lessons on Hearing God’s Voice

1. A Gift for Everyone, No Exceptions

One of the most radical and beautiful truths of our faith is that the Holy Spirit is not reserved for a select few. The prophet Joel, quoted by Peter on the day of Pentecost, made this incredible promise from God:

“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.’” – Acts 2:17-18

Read that again. The Spirit is poured out on “all flesh.” It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old, male or female, a new believer or someone who has been walking with Jesus for years. This promise includes everyone. In God’s family, there are no second-class citizens; everyone has access to hearing His voice. This is a foundational truth for our walk with Him.

2. The Encouraging Heart of Prophecy

So, if we can all hear from God, what does it sound like? Forget any ideas of “doom and gloom.” The Apostle Paul gives us a clear and simple definition of how the gift of prophecy works in the church today.

“But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.” – 1 Corinthians 14:3

This is the test for any prophetic word. It should always align with the loving, restoring nature of our Father. Let’s break it down:

  • Upbuilding (or Edification): This means to build someone up. Think of it like a friend helping you lay the foundations of a house, making it stronger. A true word from God will strengthen your faith and your sense of identity in Him.

  • Encouragement (or Exhortation): This is that feeling of being cheered on. It’s the “you can do it!” boost we all need. It inspires courage and motivates us to keep moving forward, especially when we face challenges.

  • Consolation (or Comfort): This is God’s comforting arm around our shoulders. It’s the peace that calms our hearts when we are hurting, anxious, or grieving. It’s a tender reminder that we are not alone.

Every word from God is intended to bring His goodness and light directly into our circumstances.

3. It’s All for the Common Good

Why does God give these gifts? It’s not for personal glory or to make one person seem more spiritual than another. It’s for the benefit of the entire church family.

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” – 1 Corinthians 12:7

When you receive an encouraging word for someone, it doesn’t just bless them; it strengthens the whole community. When someone shares a comforting scripture with you, it builds your faith and, in turn, equips you to comfort others. It’s all about us working together, using God’s gifts to help each other thrive.

Personal Reflection: Your Turn to Listen and Share

This isn’t just theory; it’s something you can practice this week. The Bible encourages us to actively participate in building each other up.

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Here’s a simple exercise to put this into action:

  1. Find a Quiet Moment: Set aside five minutes. You could do this on your commute, while the kettle boils, or before you go to sleep.

  2. Bring Someone to Mind: Think of a friend, a family member, or someone from your small group.

  3. Ask a Simple Question: Quietly ask, “Holy Spirit, what good thing do you want to say to this person? How can I encourage them today?”

  4. Listen Gently: Don’t stress or try to force it. Pay attention to the first positive thought, picture, or scripture that comes to mind. It might be a single word like “faithful” or “strong,” or a picture of them smiling.

  5. Share the Encouragement: This is the most important step! Send a simple WhatsApp or make a quick call. Say something like, “Hey, I was thinking of you and just wanted to say that I really admire how faithful you are. Hope you have a wonderful day!”

You will be amazed at how often your simple word of encouragement is exactly what that person needed to hear.

Conclusion: Let’s Build Each Other Up

Hearing from God is one of the most exciting and life-giving parts of our relationship with Him. It’s not a mysterious or exclusive practice, but a natural overflow of His love for His children. It’s about strengthening, encouraging, and comforting one another as we navigate life together.

Let’s be a community that eagerly listens for God’s voice and is quick to share His words of life. The more we step out in faith to encourage others, the more we will see the beautiful, strengthening power of the Holy Spirit at work in our midst.
